Mike Godfrey, ABC

Chapter Advocate

Mike has enjoyed a healthy career in corporate communications. For nearly 30 years he has led the function within the demanding and rewarding field of not-for-profit health care.

Currently, senior director of corporate communications for Scripps Health, a $4.3 billion health system in San Diego, he heads up communications for Scripps’ 17,000 employees and 3,500 physicians, communicating everything from new employee benefits and where to head during local wildfires, to corporate strategy and how changes to Medicare will affect organization objectives. He also leads Scripps’ executive communications, including the company’s Gold Quill winning annual reports.

Godfrey began his career as a U.S. Navy journalist, later working at several publication start-ups and at Rady Children’s Hospital prior to his now 25 years at Scripps. His sincere and comfortable, yet strategic approach to internal communications has effectively helped Scripps through a landmark financial and cultural turnaround, multiple closures and acquisitions, and the ongoing changes of health care reform. Likewise, his work with health care communications during the COVID-19 pandemic and other regional disasters is industry-leading.

Godfrey is the recipient of numerous communications awards, including several Gold and Silver Quills. His approach to communications – and leadership – is focused on trust, credibility and authenticity, and he has brought the same to IABC.

He received his ABC accreditation more than a decade ago, has served multiple times on the San Diego IABC chapter board and is happily joining the Pacific Plains Region Board for his second time as chapter advocate.
