Choosing to Lead: It’s Time to Modernize IABC

Ellen Vander Linden, IABC PPR Vice Chair/2023-24 Board Chair

I joined the IABC Pacific Plains Region board as vice chair in July 2022. The primary motivator for me was the wave of change coming at communication professionals.

  • Three of the 10 people in my monthly connection group decided to move out of state in the past year. Virtual or hybrid work allowed them the freedom to do it.
  • Options for professional development have multiplied with the adoption of virtual events. Topics hosted by Chicago, Seattle, Dallas and others are now accessible from the comfort of my home office in Minnesota.
  • I engage with clients who work for Minnesota-based companies but have never lived in the state. Likewise, a colleague now works for a California-based company but still lives in Minnesota.

We have all experienced the shift in how we work and how we connect with our colleagues.

The ability to network across state lines and to grow a network broader than our immediate geography is essential. Yet, we still count on our IABC membership to connect us with like-minded communication professionals wherever we choose to live.

It seems obvious these changes should influence how IABC shifts to accommodate the growing mobile workforce. In my opinion, it’s the ideal time to modernize the organization and our approach to membership.

This is why I hope you’ll consider joining the IABC Pacific Plains Region (PPR) board for the 2023-24 year. There are several roles to fill, including: finance director, communications director, chapter advocate, member-at-large advocate and vice chair. Nominations are due Monday, April 3, 2023 (extended deadline).

You can find more information on the IABC Pacific Plains Region website.
